Rebecca Loveland, Edmund Melia, Matthew Hoover, Hinlan Wong, and Timothy Richard

This report provides a look at the scale and specific nature of the defense industry in Massachusetts. The analysis includes a ten year look at defense contracting awards to the Commonwealth by the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security. The data show strong a growth in defense contracting activities with total contracts to Massachusetts nearly tripling in value since 2000. The study identifies key defense industry sectors in the state and discusses specific product lines that are particularly important within the Commonwealth. A section on Economic Impacts quantifies the important economic and employment effects generated by defense contracting activities performed in the state.
